Once you’ve acquired your water tank, the subsequent step is planning its installation. Adhering to various best practices is essential to guarantee the safety of your water storage tank. Additionally, it’s imperative to contemplate your intended usage, as this will dictate the necessary tools and whether you’ll undertake the installation yourself.
Installing a water tank becomes straightforward once you’ve determined its purpose. Here’s a brief procedure that I found particularly easy to comprehend.
1. Prepare the tank foundation – There are two options available for preparing a foundation for a water storage tank: concrete and compacted material.
- Concrete Foundation – Pour a 3-inch reinforced concrete slab that is precisely level and flat in all directions, exceeding the diameter or base dimensions of the vertical tank. Prior to pouring the concrete, ensure proper compaction of the soil base.
- Compacted Material – Create a 3-inch pad using compacted crusher dust or road base, ensuring it extends at least 24 inches beyond the diameter of the water tank. The tank base should be devoid of rocks, stones, or any sharp or foreign objects that could potentially harm the tank’s foundation. It is essential to thoroughly compact the base and ensure it is perfectly level and flat in all directions.
If you’re replacing an old tank with a new one, this step should already have been completed. However, if you’re installing a new water storage tank, ensure that you provide either a concrete or compacted material base. Additionally, ensure that the base is larger than the diameter of your tank’s base and that it is uniformly level in all directions. This will prevent unnecessary spillage and other issues in the future.
2.Install the overflow drainage pipe – If you purchased your tank from Enduraplas, your fitting may already be in place (unless otherwise specified). Then, connect the piping to the stormwater drainage system or route it to a location well away from the tank’s base to prevent undermining.

Typically, the overflow is pre-installed in your new tank. However, if it’s not, there’s no need to fret as the process is straightforward. You’ll only need to drill a hole where you’ll insert a gasket (and occasionally a filter). Securing the fixture requires drilling some screws as well. This ensures water can escape, minimizing the risk of foundation erosion.
3. Install your roof fill pipes – This is the moment to link the pipe from your roof to your tank lid. If you plan to utilize the water in your tank for human consumption, we advise consulting your local dealer regarding the necessary filters. Additionally, it’s crucial to ensure that your filter basket is firmly attached to the lid of your water tank.
Whether your catchment area is situated on the roof or near the ground, the water tank plays a pivotal role in the water collection process. After all, rainwater is wasted if not collected and promptly stored.
The placement of a water tank is a crucial aspect to maximize its utility. When determining the placement of your water tank, factors such as tank dimensions, property size and space, pipework and plumbing infrastructure, and the aesthetic appeal of your property should all be taken into consideration.
- Tank measurement
After finalizing the tank’s measurements, the subsequent phase involves assessing the size and available space of your property.
- Size and Space of your property
It’s essential to be mindful of the available space regardless of the type of tank you plan to acquire, as everything requires space, particularly if your water tank will be installed above ground. Furthermore, assessing the available space enables you to ascertain whether an above-ground water tank is viable or if an underground water tank is the only feasible option due to space constraints.
- Property Appearance
For some individuals, having a water tank on their property can be bothersome, despite the assurance of meeting their daily water needs, whether with or without restrictions. Consequently, it’s crucial to minimize the tank’s visibility.
- Pipes and plumbing framework
Position your water tank close to your downpipes; while this may restrict your location choices, it will optimize your water storage efficiency.
